Memorial Day (in the U.S.) was originally established to honor the fallen Union soldiers from the Civil War. It later came to honor all Americans who have died in military service.

Judy and I spent some time at Manhattan’s two major cemeteries – Sunrise and Sunset – taking some pictures. It was a very humbling experience to recognize the men and women who have died protecting our freedom.

I couldn’t stop with just one picture this week. The following are three images that moved me.

From Sunset Cemetery. This is in a section that has a big marker identified as “Gold Star Mothers”. These men and women never returned.

I thought this was poignant. This picture is from Sunrise Cemetery.

This final picture is of the Civil War memorial in Sunset Cemetery. It is surrounded by markers for fallen soldiers from various regiments.

I hope you had a chance to reflect on those men and women serving our country, and to appreciate the ultimate sacrifice that many have given.
