Hay, there!

Driving through rural Riley County this time of year provides many opportunities to see pastures full of baled prairie hay. I think it’s a pretty site.

I don’t recall ever seeing big round bales of hay when I was a kid. Everyone used square bales. The tractors are larger today and can better handle the size of these bales.

Take a drive. Notice what’s around you. Enjoy Riley County!

Nothing says Rural better than a lone windmill. This one in Riley County is still used to pump water to a stock tank at the base.

With alternative energy sources, we need to remember that wind energy is nothing new to those of us that grew up in Kansas. Pumping water is one of the earliest uses for wind in Kansas.

If you drive out across the country roads, you can see plenty of windmills in Riley County. Most appear to be the same upon first glance, but take the time to really observe and you will see that there are plenty of differences.

Don’t let the wind blow your wig off!
